The Bike Church is Hiring a Part-time Bicycle Mechanic/Collective Member
The Bike Church is a collectively-run community bicycle shop in downtown Santa Cruz. We are looking to hire (2) highly motivated individuals to join our collective.
You must be self-motivated, reliable, excellent at communication, and willing to participate in the decision-making process. Other helpful skills include attentiveness to detail, problem-solving, the ability to think on your feet, and conflict de-escalation. Experience teaching is a plus. Bilingual in Spanish is a huge plus.
It is very helpful if you have some familiarity with our space and collectively-run groups. You must have some experience with bike repair and we will give strong preference to an experienced bike mechanic. However, we are willing to train someone who is strong in other areas.
Though the main job is to teach people how to fix their own bikes during our open hours, there are many other aspects of running the business. Other work includes: processing incoming donations of used bikes and parts, fixing bikes to sell, bookkeeping and administrative work, posting bikes and parts to Craigslist, maintaining social media and the website, organizing the shop, stocking and ordering, facilities maintenance, as well as one-off projects which vary.
The Bike Church strives to be a safe space for all individuals from our community no matter their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, income, or ability. Applicants must be able to foster respect and create a safe and fun space for our community and should ideally enjoy helping people. At times the shop gets very busy and chaotic and staff members must be able to communicate their boundaries with the public.
Queer and trans people, women, BIPOC, retired, and differently-abled applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Work duties: work 1–2 shifts a week, maintain a clerkship, attend twice monthly collective meetings, and participate in mandatory trainings.
This is a flexible part-time job of minimum 6 and maximum 20 hours per week, schedule to be determined. Pay is $15/hour. We are looking for at minimum a two-year commitment. Employment begins June 15.
To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume with (2) professional references by June 1, 2021.
